PayPal conversion rates – good value or hidden profit?

December 1, 2009

So I recently spent $9.97 on enabling me to use my dantwining.com domain in place of dantwining.wordpress.com. I was given the choice of either having paypal bill me in $, and take whatever conversion rate my credit card company would offer me, or accept the paypal rate and have them bill me in £. But which one is better? There’s only one way to find out… Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaths!

PayPal was going to charge me £1 for every $1.62316; so that’s £6.14

When the bill came through, my credit card company had charged me for $9.97 @ 0.6189 £-per-$, so the actual cost was £6.17

Damn.

Still, I don’t know if that’s paypal giving me a good rate, or just ripping me off ever so slightly less than my credit card company does. I guess that’s kind of a moot point, given that they are the only two ways I have of paying.
