Update: Apple 23" Cinema Display – the saga continues

January 5, 2009

As you may have read in my earlier post, we’ve a 23″ Apple Cinema Display (ACD) that isn’t quite perfect… In fact, it was so less than perfect that it had to go back.

What went wrong? Well, the screen would flick to black, and then flick back on; at first only occasionally, and for a very brief time, but the black-screens happened more frequently and for slightly longer each time, until the whole thing just turned black and the picture wouldn’t come back at all. I switched it over to my macbook, but whilst the laptop thought that the screen was there, and would happily extend the desktop onto it, the screen stayed black. So it was back into its packaging and back to the shop.

It’s now off getting repaired (or, at least, looked at) and we’ve a loan 23″ ACD in its place. Which is nice, but:

  1. It has exactly the same backlight/usb/power button problem as the original.
  2. It suffers from *really bad* ghosting/burn in, so, for example, if I go from viewing a web page to viewing the desktop, you can see the window I’ve just minimised “burnt in” to the desktop. I guess this has something to do with it being the monitor they use for testing, but whatever the reason, it’s not good.
  3. I had kinda got my mind set on getting a refund and replacing it with an HP LP2475W, but, you never know, I might buy one of those for myself in work anyway…

In the end, they gave us a replacement. I guess that whatever it was, it was beyond repair.
